In Memoriam
James G. Hakim, MD

It is with deep sadness that we learned of the death of Dr James G. Hakim. An acclaimed researcher and professor, Dr Hakim was a profoundly important leader in the fight against HIV and AIDS in Africa. He was the Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare and, as a former member of the CROI Program Committee, he ensured that issues faced by Africa, particularly Zimbabwe, were addressed and discussed at CROI.

In 2017, Dr Hakim was honored and recognized for his essential work as an HIV/AIDS researcher in Africa and delivered the prestigious N’Galy Mann Lecture during the opening session at CROI 2017 in Seattle, Washington. His extraordinary N’Galy Mann Lecture can be viewed here.

The following year, Dr Hakim was elected a Board member of the Society for AIDS in Africa, which organizes the International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA), an important conference with which he began his association in 2015 as Co-chair of the scientific program. At the time of his passing, Dr Hakim had been the Scientific Chair of the forthcoming ICASA 2021.

While celebrating the tremendous scientific and academic accomplishments that mark the prolific career of Dr Hakim, we mourn not only the loss of a great humanitarian but also of what he might have brought to the fight against HIV and AIDS in Africa and around the world in the years ahead.
