We greatly appreciate everyone’s patience as we worked through the financial implications of emergently transitioning CROI 2020 from an in-person to a virtual conference as the COVID-19 pandemic began to unfold. By mid-February, we had already incurred nearly all of the budgetary expenses for convening the conference live. The additional expenses for transitioning immediately to a virtual conference and the subsequent penalties—incurred by the cancellation of contracts for conference facilities, vendors, and hotel usage—have subsumed our additional resources. It was an astonishing accomplishment that we were able to deliver the full CROI scientific content virtually under very challenging circumstances, and although we all missed the face-to-face contact and networking so critical to our scientific efforts, we are grateful that the science presented was of the highest quality, impactful, and well-received. The full financial impact of this situation on future CROI conferences will not be known for some time, as we are in ongoing legal negotiations with several hotels that have imposed substantial penalties for not filling contracted rooms. As a result, we are not able to refund the CROI 2020 registration fees. Many of you have let us know that your institutions have reimbursed the registration fee, given that the science was delivered. We thank you for your understanding, and the work that so many of you are doing to maintain the important work that is the foundation of CROI, as well as your own transitioning to tackle and combat the devastating COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath while keeping you and yours safe and healthy.
