CROI invites international investigators and clinicians in resource-limited settings and developing countries (as determined by the World Bank) working in HIV and hepatitis viruses research and clinical care who would be unable to participate in the Conference without financial support to apply for an International Investigator Scholarship.

Scholarship Application Submission

The scholarship application submission deadline for CROI 2024 is Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at 5:00 PM PT. Dispositions will be sent by email on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. Access the CROI Scholarship Submission System (clicking the link opens the submission website). 

Note: Scholarship applications are only available for general abstract submissions on HIV and hepatitis viruses and their related conditions. Scholarship applications are unavailable for our December 1st submission opening for late-breaking abstracts on HIV and hepatitis viruses. 

Obtaining a visa for travel to the US: Citizens from some countries must obtain a US visa for travel to CROI. If you plan to attend CROI 2024, book a visa appointment as soon as possible. You may use the CROI Letter Of Invitation For Visa And Other Purposes as supporting documentation to obtain a visa. The Visa Section of the US State Department Website provides additional information on obtaining a visa.

Scholarship Award

Registration
Recipients of the International Investigator Scholarship award will receive complimentary conference registration.

Travel
Recipients of an International Investigator Scholarship award will receive up to US $750 (US/Canada) or US $1500 (international) toward air, rail, or bus transportation to and from the conference at the lowest fare for economy travel.

Hotel
Discounted hotel rates are available to International Investigator Scholarship recipients on a first-come, first-served basis. Scholarship recipients are responsible for the cost of their hotel and all attendees must book a hotel through the CROI registration and housing system.

Scholarships are awarded based on the quality of the application, a letter of recommendation, and the level of financial need. 

Scholarship Criteria

Applicants must: 

  • Be the presenting author on an accepted abstract 
  • Actively participate in the research or clinical care of HIV, hepatitis viruses, SARS-CoV-2, and other viral infections and their related conditions 
  • Work in a resource-limited setting, defined as a Low and Middle-Income Country by the World Bank
  • Engage in international collaborations in which information learned at the conference can be shared 
  • Be fluent in English 

All scholarship recipients are required to participate in the full conference, including the Program Committee Workshop for New Investigators and Trainees. At the close of the conference, scholarship recipients must have completed the daily and overall conference evaluations. 

Scholarship recipients who believe that they may not be able to commit to participating in the entire conference can choose 1 of the following 3 options: 

  1. Adjust other conflicting commitments, participate in the full conference, and maintain the scholarship 
  2. Decline the scholarship, pay the full registration fee, present their work, and not be required to participate in the full conference 
  3. Choose not to participate in the conference and assign a coauthor to present the work at the conference 

Scholarship recipients are limited to a total of 3 scholarships. Due to the transition of CROI 2020 from an in-person to a virtual conference, scholarships received that year will not be included in the consideration of the number of scholarships the applicant has received.
